Why ecological landscaping?

Adding Native Plants to Your Pittsburgh Garden Can Reduce Pollution

PROTECT WILDLIFE

Up to 60% of North American native bee species are pollen specialists who rely on the pollen of certain native plants to feed their young. If these species die out because their food sources and habitats disappear, it affects the entire ecosystem around them (including humans!).

REDUCE POLLUTION

Planting native species that are adapted to local conditions means your garden can thrive with minimal or no herbicide and pesticide use, which means those chemicals won’t runoff into your local water supply.

Plus, eliminating all or part of your grass lawn means you can also eliminate mowing and leaf blowing, which dramatically cuts down on air pollution.

Pittsburgh Garden Design for Climate Resilience

CLIMATE RESILIENCE

Scientists estimate that nature-based climate solutions can account for 30% of the carbon sequestration needed to limit global warming.

And with climate change causing more extreme weather patterns, strategically placing native plants that prevent erosion and survive floods or droughts is an investment in your home’s climate protection plan.

BONUS! IT’S JUST EASIER

What if I said you could have a beautiful garden that feeds you, supports your local pollinators, birds, and other animals, sequesters carbon, and is virtually self-sustaining? With an ecological landscape design in place, this is a very real possibility. Say goodbye to spending your weekends mowing, weeding, and raking! (And hello to all your new bird and butterfly neighbors.)

The traditional suburban lawn, on average, has 10x more chemical pesticides per acre than farmland.

By choosing native plants for your landscaping, you are not only helping wildlife, you are creating a healthier place for yourself, your family, and your community.

Katie Urich Garden Revolution Landscape Architect Pittsburgh

Hi, I’m Kat.

In 2020, looking for a momentary escape from my Way Too Online work in social media marketing, I took a class about how to turn my grass lawn into a pollinator garden. One class led to another, and a pollinator garden led to a veggie garden led to a native micro-meadow.

Turns out getting my hands in the soil was exactly the kind of depth I was craving.

And when I dug even deeper into permaculture design, it felt strangely familiar. All of my favorite parts of previous jobs exist here: the beautiful spaces of my art museum days, the joy of helping new ideas click like my time as an educator, and the strategic thinking of my work in nonprofit marketing.

As a certified Permaculture Designer, I can help you reconnect with nature in your own backyard.

A thoughtfully designed garden can heal the soil, welcome life back into a space, nourish humans and wildlife alike, and bring real, bone-deep joy to those who tend it.

Let’s do some good together.
