Because I am located in Western Pennsylvania, I focused on including plants in this database that are native to Appalachia, the Northeast, and the Midwest.
Whenever possible, I opted for species with broader native ranges. You’ll find county-level BONAP maps included with every plant species to help you determine if a plant is a good fit for your area.

As the actual biological mother of a pit bull mix who loves to explore mouth-first, I’ve taken special care to research and note whether every single plant in this database is toxic to dogs, cats, or horses. You can even filter by safe plants for your pet! <3
Of course, levels of toxicity vary greatly - some plants may cause mild stomach upset and some plants can be fatal if ingested. Extreme cases are noted.

By their very nature, native plants have evolved to not only survive, but thrive in certain areas. Instead of using USDA Hardiness Zones, take a look at the native range map included for each species to see if a plant will work for you!

If you’re new to Notion, welcome! I love this tool because it’s user-friendly, allows me to update the database regularly, prettier than a spreadsheet, and you don’t have to create an account to use it.
You can open the link in your browser (on your desktop, tablet, or phone), and there’s a “How to” guide and video at the top of the page to help you navigate.

This resource is made to be accessed digitally. When you buy, you'll get a secret link that you can bookmark and come back to whenever you want. Because it's digital, that means you'll also automatically get access to every single update!
That said, if you check the “Add to My Garden” box, you could totally print a page that includes all the plants you'd like in your garden to bring shopping with you or easily reference.

YES! Every single native plant provides benefits to our ecosystem. No matter what kind of space you have, whether it's a few pots on a balcony or several acres, you can make a real difference.
Some native plants have super deep roots or require a lot of space, but many can thrive in containers, grow up a trellis, or stay put in a small garden plot. Notes about each plant's growing habits are included to help you find the perfect fit for your space.
Use your garden for good.
The Garden Revolution Guide to Native Plants is hundreds of hours and several years in the making.
(And counting! More plants are added all the time.)
It’s the only tool of its kind, and it’s only $19.
Because making ecologically sound choices should be easy and accessible.
Join the revolution. Plant native plants.
